What do we need to get married in Florida?
Every couple getting married in Florida must have applied for and received a Florida Marriage License. This is the document your wedding officiant will sign or notarize (I'm a notary). You can use the EMarriage Application and bring it to the clerk/courthouse to obtain your permit/license to marry.
-
How do we obtain a permit to marry in Florida?
The EMarriage Application is a required form that must be filled out prior to obtaining a Marriage License from the Clerk’s office. This puts you in the waiting queue.
-
Where in Florida do we obtain the marriage license?
You must appear at the Clerk of Court and obtain the official license after you've completed the application. Details here.
-
When should I apply for a marriage license?
Florida marriage licenses are valid for 60 days from the effective date so you must be married before the expiration date or you'll be required to reapply.
-
Is there a waiting period to marry in FL?
If you're both non-residents of FL, you do NOT have to wait 3 days to marry after getting your license. If either of you live in FL, you'll need to wait 3 days from the permit's effective date before your ceremony date.
-
Does my fiancé and I have to be in Florida to collect the license?
Yes, you'll have to show your ID and pay the fee. Plan to visit FL a few days before your ceremony date to pick up your permit. You cannot legally be married by an officiant if you do not have proof of a permit. This link outlines the requirements by the state.
-
Does the wedding officiant need to see the permit before marrying us?
Yes! Bring your permit/license to the wedding/elopement ceremony so your marriage can be solemnized! If hired as your officiant, I'll notarize and file the license on your behalf within 10 days of the ceremony. The final document will be mailed to you after it is recorded as a legal document in Florida.

How can I honor the occasion of our marriage without the wedding fanfare?
The simple choice is with a Signing Ceremony.
1. Obtain a valid marriage license from the state of Florida and present this to me on the date of your ceremony.
2. You and your partner will meet me at my downtown St. Pete location so I can solemnize and sign the marriage certificate.
3. No witnesses are necessary to get married and the whole event takes less than 15 minutes!
